Sexual and Reproductive Rights
Why is it important to focus on Sexual and Reproductive Rights? In many parts of the world, sexual and reproductive health and rights are not universally protected, promoted and fulfilled. The many manifestations of this include high maternal mortality and morbidity, a high number of unwanted (teenage) pregnancies, many unsafe abortions, and a continuation of the HIV-epidemic. This has high costs both at the individual and societal level. The right to sexual and reproductive health is key to women’s ability to take charge of their own lives and thus provide them with an opportunity to play an equal role in sociaty. But protecting these rights is also key to ensure viable and sustainable societies overall.
